Aid given in support of victims of the "Maxima" tragedy in Latvia
On Thursday November 21 at the "Maxima" big-box store in the Zolitūde neighborhood of Riga, Latvia, the roof collapsed onto shoppers and workers in the store resulting in the deaths of at least 54 people.
According to press accounts, the government of Latvia has promised compensation of 10,000 Lats to the families of those killed and 5,000 Lats to those injured. The company Maxima (www.Maxima.lv) has promised to cover medical and rehabilitation expenses for all victims and to support children who were orphaned by the tragedy at the level of an average salary until they reach majority.
The Latvian Ev. Luth. Congregation of New York has established a fund to allow individuals and organizations in the USA to donate in support of the victims of this tragedy and their families. You may send checks, payable to: "Latvian Ev. Luth. Church of N.Y." (please write "Zolitude" or "Maxima tragedy" in the memo
